Business Intelligence for Poison Control Centers
Objective
The Florida Poison Information Center Network (FPICN), serving residents across Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands, partnered with NLP Logix to modernize its data intelligence and reporting capabilities. The goal was to integrate disparate data sources, provide interactive public and internal dashboards, and enable better operational and public health decision making while maintaining high standards of accuracy and transparency.
Challenge
FPICN had developed strong data collection systems over decades of emergency service delivery, yet reporting tools were limited in scope and accessibility. The organization needed a modern business intelligence platform that could support both public information and internal operational reporting needs.
Key challenges included:
- Data stored across multiple systems, including custom clinical record tools and external health data sets
- Limited ability to visualize and interact with poisoning trends at the county or demographic level
- Need to combine internal call data with external health utilization records for epidemiological context
- Demand for public-facing access to de-identified exposure information
- Difficulty providing real-time operational reporting for internal response and resource planning
Solution
NLP Logix designed and created a reporting and analytics infrastructure through a strategic business intelligence and operational reporting modernization effort. This turned complex public health and operational data into clear information flows that supported both mission-driven insights and public awareness.
Key initiatives included:
- Unified Data Framework: Consolidated internal call records, exposure data, and relevant external health data into a centralized platform to provide consistent reporting and trend analysis.
- Advanced BI and Dashboard Development: Built interactive dashboards using Tableau and integrated them into the public website, allowing users to explore poisoning trends by county, age group, exposure type, and year.
- Operational Reporting Tools: Developed internal operational reporting views to support real-time decision making and resource allocation across the state’s three poison centers.
- Data Visualization for Public Outreach: Enabled interactive public access to de-identified poison exposure data to support education, prevention messages, and community awareness.
- Contextual Epidemiological Insights: Structured analytics to help users interpret trends and patterns, linking poisoning data with external public health indicators where appropriate.
Results
- Increased transparency with publicly available interactive dashboards showing poisoning trends and call summaries.
- Greatly reduced manual effort that previously required to compile reports for internal and legislative audiences.
- Enhanced ability to explore data by geography, exposure type, and demographic filters.
- Faster, more consistent operational reporting for internal stakeholders.
- Built on a scalable foundation for future analytics such as predictive modeling.
